How to Recover a Lost OKX Wallet Password (2026 Guide)

You open OKX Wallet, it asks for your password, and nothing you type works. That's a bad moment, but it isn't always the end. Depending on what you still have, there may be a way back in. This guide covers how OKX Wallet's password works, what you can try yourself, and what to do when the do-it-yourself route runs out.

Two scope notes first. This guide covers the self-custody OKX Wallet (the Web3 wallet). If you're locked out of your OKX exchange account, use OKX's official reset; OKX holds those keys and can restore that account for you. And this guide covers a forgotten password. If you've lost your recovery phrase, go to our OKX Wallet recovery phrase guide.

We recover crypto wallets for a living, so we'll tell you what's realistic.

First, which OKX Wallet do you have?

OKX offers two kinds of self-custody wallet, and each one recovers differently:

  • Seed-phrase wallet: a traditional wallet with a 12-word recovery phrase, protected on your device by a password. Offline password recovery applies to this one.
  • Keyless (MPC) wallet, which OKX's app now labels Social login: no seed phrase. Your key is split into shares held by your device, OKX's server, and your cloud backup. If you're locked out of a keyless wallet, you get back in through your cloud backup share, not by cracking a password. OKX's help center walks through that flow.

Everything below is about the seed-phrase wallet.

How OKX Wallet stores your keys and password

OKX Wallet keeps your keys on your device. On the seed-phrase wallet, your password encrypts that wallet data locally. OKX never sees or stores the password, so OKX can't reset it for you.

The same design is what makes recovery possible. The encrypted wallet sitting on your device is locked by your password alone, and a locked file can be worked on offline.

OKX's own reset flow needs your recovery phrase or private key. If you've lost the phrase and forgotten the password, OKX's tools can't help you, but the encrypted wallet may still be recoverable.

Password or recovery phrase: which problem do you have?

  • You have your recovery phrase. You don't need password recovery. Reset the wallet in OKX, re-import the phrase, and set a new password.
  • You've lost the phrase and can't get past the password. This is where the encrypted wallet and offline recovery come in.
  • You've lost the phrase and have no encrypted wallet or backup. There's usually no way back. We cover that case below.

If the phrase is your real problem, read the OKX Wallet recovery phrase guide instead.

Before you start: what you need

  • The device or browser where the OKX Wallet extension is still installed. The encrypted wallet lives there.
  • Your best password guesses: passwords you reuse, old variations, any notes from setup.
  • Your password manager and browser autofill. Check these first.

You don't need your recovery phrase for any of this. Password recovery works on the encrypted wallet file.

DIY recovery, step by step

1. Check your password manager and browser

Search your saved passwords and notes for "OKX" or "wallet" before you try anything harder. Plenty of "lost" passwords turn up in autofill.

2. Confirm the encrypted wallet is still there

If the extension still shows a password prompt, the encrypted wallet is on that device. That file is what any recovery works from, so don't reset the wallet, uninstall the extension, or clear the browser's data. OKX's reset clears the wallet from the device before you re-import, which is harmless with your phrase and fatal without it.

3. Brainstorm password candidates

Think about how you build passwords: the base words you reuse, the numbers and symbols you tack on, how you capitalize, and what you were using around the time you set up the wallet. Write down every plausible piece and every variation.

4. Build a testing plan

Turn the brainstorm into a structured list of candidate words and the patterns you combine them with. Forgotten passwords are rarely random. Most are your normal habits with one detail you can't recall, and a methodical list of those habits gets you much further than guessing.

When DIY isn't enough: professional recovery

If you still have the encrypted OKX Wallet but the password won't come back to you, this is the work we do. Crypto Asset Recovery uses secure, offline password cracking to recover access to encrypted OKX Wallet vaults. You send us the encrypted wallet and your list of candidates. We run the cracking on offline, air-gapped machines, so your keys are never exposed online.

You only pay if we succeed. Completely risk-free.

The more you can tell us about how you build passwords and when you created the wallet, the better your odds. If you'd rather not hand over every password you use, give us close variants or only the ones you think matter. That lowers the odds somewhat, and it's your call.

When recovery is not possible

If you have no recovery phrase and no encrypted wallet (no device with the extension, no backup), there's nothing to recover from, and the funds are very likely gone. Self-custody has no master key. Be wary of anyone who promises recovery in that situation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reset my OKX Wallet password? Yes, if you have your recovery phrase or private key. OKX's reset flow re-imports the wallet from the phrase, and no reset works without it. If you've lost the phrase, you may still be able to recover the password from the encrypted wallet.

Can OKX recover my password for me? No. OKX Wallet is non-custodial, so OKX stores no password and can't reset it or give you your recovery phrase. The OKX exchange account works differently, and OKX can reset that one.

What if I have the keyless (MPC) OKX wallet? Then you have no seed phrase or password vault to crack. You restore a keyless wallet from your cloud backup share by following OKX's recovery flow.

How long does recovery take? Anywhere from about 20 to 30 minutes to, in our longest case, over two years. Most of that time is passive. You send us your encrypted wallet and your best password guesses, we run the recovery on our own machines, and we come back to you for fresh guesses each time we finish a batch. Once we've looked at your case, we'll give you a straight read on your odds.

Is it safe to send you my wallet file? Yes. Crypto Asset Recovery is a registered company in New Hampshire, run by a public father-and-son team, Chris and Charles. We work only from your encrypted wallet file and your password guesses, and neither can move your funds. Most people's real worry is whether a recovery service is a scam. We operate in the open, and misusing a client's wallet would land us in court fast.
