If your Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase won't work (it won't import, it's missing a word, or you can't find it at all), don't panic yet. A phrase that won't import or is short a word is often not the end of the road. A phrase that's lost entirely, with no backup, is harder, and we'll be honest about that too. This guide covers all three situations and your real options for each.

What is a Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase?
Your Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase) is a list of 12 words that is the master key to your wallet. Your wallet derives every private key and address from it. Coinbase Wallet uses the standard BIP39 format, the same one MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and most modern wallets use, which means the words come from a fixed list of 2,048 English words and the phrase includes a built-in checksum.
A recovery phrase looks like twelve ordinary, lowercase words in a specific order, for example: "ridge / lumber / obey / ..." (we're not showing a full one on purpose; never post a real phrase anywhere). Order and spelling both matter, and every word must come from the BIP39 list.
Two things worth knowing about Coinbase specifically:
- Coinbase cannot recover your phrase for you. The wallet is non-custodial, so Coinbase never stores it. Their own support says as much.
- The wallet is now also called the Base App. Coinbase rebranded Coinbase Wallet to the Base App in 2025. The recovery phrase works the same way. If a help page says "Base wallet recovery phrase," that's the same thing.
Recovery phrase vs. private key vs. password
People mix these up, and the fix is different for each:
- Recovery phrase: the 12-word master key. This article is about this.
- Private key: a single key for one account, which Coinbase Wallet also lets you export. Losing one private key isn't the same as losing your whole phrase.
- Password: the local unlock for the extension (or your encrypted cloud backup's password). If your phrase is fine but you're stuck on a password, read our Coinbase Wallet password recovery guide instead.
Now, the three scenarios.
Scenario A: You have the phrase but it won't import ("invalid")
If Coinbase Wallet (or another wallet) says your recovery phrase is invalid, the words are probably right but something small is off. The usual culprits:
- A typo or misspelling. Every word must match the BIP39 list exactly. "Recieve" or "wallett" will fail.
- Wrong word order. BIP39 phrases only validate in the exact original order.
- A wrong or swapped word. An easy-to-confuse word (e.g. a look-alike) breaks the checksum.
- Extra spaces or capital letters. Phrases are lowercase, single-spaced.
- Wrong wallet or derivation path. If the phrase imports but shows an empty wallet, your funds may sit under a different account or chain rather than being gone. This is common when moving between wallets.
Work through these one by one. If you're confident the words are close but you can't get a valid combination, this is exactly the kind of case our mnemonic-correction work handles: small errors in an otherwise-real phrase.
Scenario B: You're missing one or more words
The good news surprises people: because BIP39 phrases include a checksum, a phrase that's missing a word or two is often recoverable. The valid combinations are a finite set, and the checksum rules out the vast majority of guesses, so the problem becomes searchable rather than impossible.
How feasible it is scales with how much is missing:
- One missing word: highly recoverable in most cases.
- Two or three missing words, or a few words you're unsure of: often still workable, though the search grows.
- Many missing words: the possibilities explode, and at some point it stops being realistic. We'll tell you honestly where your case falls.

Scenario C: The phrase is gone entirely
If you can't find the phrase at all, don't give up before checking one thing: do you still have an encrypted wallet or backup?
- If the Coinbase Wallet browser extension is still installed, you may be able to recover through the password instead of the phrase. - If there's no phrase, no encrypted wallet, and no backup anywhere, then honestly, there's usually no way back. Coinbase can't help, we can't manufacture a key that was never stored, and anyone who guarantees otherwise is not being truthful. Self-custody has no master override.
Before you conclude it's gone, though, search everywhere: old notebooks, password managers, secure notes, photos you took (even though you shouldn't have), safe-deposit boxes, and old devices where the wallet might still be installed. We've seen plenty of "lost" phrases turn up in a drawer.
