Leap Wallet Shut Down: How to Recover Your Crypto (2026)

Leap Wallet, the Cosmos wallet many people used for IBC transfers and staking on chains like the Cosmos Hub and Celestia, shut down on May 28, 2026. If you still had funds in it, the most important thing to know is that your crypto didn't go anywhere. It's still on the blockchains, at the same addresses. Leap was a self-custody wallet, so the app was only ever a way to reach your funds. What you need now is your recovery phrase, or failing that, the encrypted wallet Leap left in your browser.

This guide covers what happened, how to move your funds, and what to do if you've lost your phrase or forgotten your password. We recover crypto wallets for a living, so we'll tell you what's realistic.

What happened to Leap Wallet?

Leap started out as a Terra wallet and grew into one of the main Cosmos wallets, later adding EVM chains, Bitcoin, Solana, and more. On April 2, 2026, the team announced it was sunsetting Leap Wallet and its related products, and they closed on May 28, 2026. The shutdown covered the browser extension, the iOS and Android apps, the web app, and Leap's other services, including its Cosmos Hub validator and its sister wallet, Compass. Leap said that after that date its apps would stop working, even copies already installed in your browser or on your phone.

This was a business decision, not a hack. We found no documented breach of Leap Wallet itself.

If you have your recovery phrase: import it into another wallet

This is the straightforward case. Your 12- or 24-word recovery phrase controls every account Leap created from it.

  1. Pick a maintained wallet that supports your chains. Leap's own sunset notice suggested Keplr, MetaMask, Phantom, or Rabby. For Cosmos chains, Keplr is the natural fit. MetaMask and Rabby cover EVM chains, and Phantom covers Solana and Bitcoin. If you used Leap across several ecosystems, you may need more than one.
  2. Import your phrase using that wallet's "import" or "restore" option.
  3. Check your addresses. Compare the addresses the new wallet shows with your old Leap addresses. If something looks empty, see below.

Only enter your phrase into a wallet app you installed from its official source, never into a website that claims to "migrate" Leap wallets.

Imported your phrase, but something's missing?

Usually nothing is lost:

  • A different account or derivation path. Wallets don't all scan the same accounts or use the same paths. Look for an option to show more accounts or set a custom derivation path. Cosmos chains usually use coin type 118, but not all of them.
  • Accounts that never came from your phrase. If you imported a private key into Leap, or used a Ledger, those accounts don't come back with your phrase. You need that private key or that Ledger.
  • A wrong phrase that still passed. A mistyped word occasionally still produces a valid phrase that opens an empty wallet. Check every word.
  • A second wallet inside Leap. If you created more than one wallet in Leap, each may have its own phrase. A phrase only restores the accounts that came from it.
  • Staked tokens. Staking positions live on-chain too, so they come back with your phrase. If you delegated ATOM to Leap's own validator, it shut down with the wallet and has stopped earning you rewards. Redelegate to another validator from your new wallet, or unbond (on the Cosmos Hub, unbonding takes 21 days).

Lost your phrase, but Leap is still installed?

If the Leap extension is still in your browser, it may not open at all. Leap said its apps would stop working after May 28, including copies already installed. That doesn't mean the encrypted wallet is gone: as far as we know, it's still in your browser's data, so leave it there. If the extension does still open and you know the password, check whether it will show your recovery phrase or private key, and write them down.

If you've forgotten the password, be careful. Leap's own forgot-password fix was a button labelled "Clear data and restore using recovery phrase". It wipes the wallet's data and expects you to restore from the phrase. Without the phrase, that wipes the one thing that can still be recovered. So:

  • Don't use "Clear data and restore", uninstall the extension, or clear your browser data.
  • Don't reset the browser or wipe the computer.
  • Don't expect to reinstall Leap to start over. It's gone from the stores.

The encrypted wallet in your browser is locked by your password alone, and it can be worked on offline. Crypto Asset Recovery recovers passwords for encrypted Leap wallets. You send us the encrypted wallet and your best password guesses, and we run the cracking on offline, air-gapped machines. When we find the password, you get your recovery phrase back. You only pay if we succeed.

For help building a list of password guesses, see our guide on how to find old passwords.

If you only ever used Leap on your phone, contact us anyway, but we can't promise anything: getting an encrypted wallet off a phone is a different problem, and we look at those case by case.

Have part of your phrase?

If you wrote your phrase down but a word is missing, misspelled, or the phrase won't import, it's often fixable. Recovery phrases have a built-in checksum, so a single missing word leaves only a small number of valid possibilities (as few as 8 for a 24-word phrase) to test against an address you know held funds. Two missing words is a much bigger search, but often still possible, especially if you know where the gaps are.

Crypto Asset Recovery reconstructs incomplete and invalid recovery phrases offline. Seed recovery means working with the words you still have, so you'll share your partial phrase with us. Share it only with a recovery service you've verified, never with anyone who contacts you first. For more on how this works, see our guide to recovering a seed phrase with a missing word.

When recovery isn't possible

With no recovery phrase, no private key, no Ledger, and no installed extension, there's nothing left to recover from. Leap could never retrieve a lost phrase, and nobody else can regenerate one. We'd rather tell you that plainly than sell you false hope.

Beware of shutdown scams

Wallet shutdowns attract scammers. Watch for fake "migration" sites, fake refunds or airdrops, and fake Leap support reaching out by DM. Nobody legitimate will ever ask for your recovery phrase.

If your funds were stolen, we don't recover stolen crypto, but we can refer you to a partner who investigates theft.

Frequently asked questions

Is my crypto gone now that Leap Wallet shut down? No. Your crypto is on the blockchains, not in the Leap app. Anyone with your recovery phrase (or the right private key or Ledger) can still reach it from another wallet.

When did Leap Wallet shut down? Leap announced its sunset on April 2, 2026, and closed its wallet products on May 28, 2026.

Was Leap Wallet hacked? No. The shutdown was a business decision. We found no documented breach of Leap Wallet itself.

Where do I import my Leap recovery phrase? Into any maintained wallet that supports the chains you used. For Cosmos chains, use a Cosmos-compatible wallet. Install it from the official website or app store, never from a link someone sends you.

I forgot my Leap password and lost my phrase. Is there any hope? Possibly, if the Leap extension is still installed in your browser. The encrypted wallet can be tested against your password guesses offline. Don't use "Clear data and restore" or uninstall the extension.

Is Compass Wallet the same as Leap? No, but it shut down too. Compass, a Sei wallet made by the Leap team, closed on the same date, May 28, 2026. The same advice applies: import your phrase into another wallet, and if you've lost the phrase, don't clear or uninstall the Compass extension.
