Phantom Recovery Phrase: What to Do If It's Lost, Invalid, or Missing Words

Your Phantom recovery phrase is the master key to your wallet, which makes it alarming when Phantom rejects it, restores a wallet with nothing in it, or you notice a word is missing. Most of these problems are fixable. A rejected phrase is usually one small mistake from working. An "empty" wallet is usually showing the wrong account. And a phrase with a word or two missing can very often be rebuilt.

We recover crypto wallets for a living, seed-phrase cases included, so we'll tell you what's realistic.

What is the Phantom Secret Recovery Phrase?

Phantom calls it your Secret Recovery Phrase. It's a list of words that generates every private key and address in your Phantom wallet, on every network Phantom supports. Phantom is non-custodial: it never stores your phrase, and its support team can't retrieve or replace it.

  • Phantom creates 12-word phrases. That's the standard for a Phantom wallet.
  • It also imports 24-word phrases from other wallets.
  • Phantom's separate Terminal trading account has its own 24-word phrase. Don't confuse it with your main wallet's 12 words.
  • The words follow the BIP39 standard: every word comes from a list of 2,048, and the last word works partly as a checksum.

How to view your recovery phrase in Phantom

If Phantom still opens on any device, you can see the phrase and write it down. Do it now.

  1. Open Phantom (the mobile app or the browser extension) and unlock it.
  2. Tap or click your avatar, then Settings.
  3. Go to Security & Privacy, then Show Recovery Phrase.
  4. Confirm, and write the words down in order, somewhere private.

Signed up with Google or Apple? Your wallet still has a recovery phrase, even if you never saw it during setup, and you can view and export it the same way while you're signed in. A few things to know before you sign back in:

  • Use the same provider you signed up with. Signing in with the other one creates a separate, empty wallet.
  • You may also need your four-digit PIN. Phantom is moving these wallets to a sign-in without a PIN, but wallets that haven't switched yet still ask for it.
  • Don't guess the PIN freely. After seven wrong attempts, Phantom deletes the encrypted backup on that device, and Phantom can't reset a lost PIN. If Phantom is still open on another device, export your phrase there instead.

Can't open Phantom because you've forgotten your password? Read our Phantom password recovery guide before you reset anything: the encrypted wallet in your browser may still be recoverable.

Scenario A: Phantom says your phrase is invalid

When Phantom rejects a phrase, the words are usually close and one detail is off:

  • A misspelled word. Each word must match the BIP39 list exactly. The first four letters of a word (or the whole word, if it's shorter) are enough to identify it, which helps with messy handwriting.
  • Words out of order, or two words swapped. The checksum fails.
  • The wrong number of words. Check you're entering all 12 (or 24).
  • Extra spaces or capitals. Use lowercase words. The mobile app wants single spaces between words; the browser extension wants one word per box, so don't paste the whole phrase into the first box.
  • A phrase from another product. A Terminal phrase, or a phrase from a wallet that doesn't use BIP39, won't restore your main Phantom wallet.

If every word looks right and it still won't validate, a word may be misread. That's a search problem, and it's often solvable.

Scenario B: The phrase restores, but the wallet looks empty

This is the most common panic, and usually nothing is lost. Check these:

  1. A different account or address. Phantom derives many addresses from one phrase. It scans for accounts with past activity, but an account you never used, or one at a later index, may not appear automatically. Compare the address Phantom shows with one you know held funds.
  2. A different derivation path. Phantom supports its standard paths for Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and Bitcoin, plus older alternate paths that only appear if they have activity. Phrases from other wallets can land on different addresses.
  3. Accounts that were never from this phrase. Private keys you imported separately, other phrases you imported, Ledger accounts, and watch-only addresses don't come back with your main phrase.
  4. A slightly wrong phrase that still passed. The checksum catches most mistakes, but about 1 in 16 wrong 12-word phrases still passes and opens a valid, empty wallet. Check every word.
  5. Sui. Phantom ended Sui support on September 24, 2026, so Sui assets won't appear in Phantom. They're still on the Sui network; import your phrase into a wallet that supports Sui. Be wary of anyone offering "Sui migration help".

Scenario C: One or more words are missing

This is where the checksum helps you:

  • One missing word, and you know where it goes: 2,048 possibilities, cut by the checksum to about 128 for a 12-word phrase. Checking those against your address takes minutes.
  • One missing word, position unknown: about 24,600 possibilities, roughly 1,500 of them valid. Still quick.
  • Two missing words: about 4.2 million possibilities if you know the positions. A real search, but very winnable.
  • Three or more: billions of combinations. Harder, but sometimes possible, especially if you remember fragments.

What helps most: the words you have, in order; any letters you remember; and a Solana (or other) address you know held funds, so the search can confirm the right wallet.

If you're missing words, this is exactly what we do. Crypto Asset Recovery reconstructs incomplete and invalid recovery phrases offline, testing every valid combination against your wallet's addresses on air-gapped machines. You only pay if we succeed.

Scenario D: The phrase is gone entirely

Without any of the words, nobody can rebuild the phrase. But first check:

  • Is Phantom still open on any device? View and write down the phrase there.
  • Did you sign up with Google or Apple? Sign in again with the same provider (plus your PIN, if Phantom still asks for one), then export your phrase. Read the PIN warning above before you start guessing.
  • Is the Phantom extension still installed, but locked? The encrypted wallet in your browser holds your phrase, and a forgotten password is often recoverable. See our Phantom password recovery guide. Don't reset or uninstall Phantom in the meantime.

Your phone's regular iCloud or Google backup won't help: Phantom says device backups don't restore its credentials.

With none of these, the wallet is very likely unrecoverable. We'd rather tell you that plainly than sell you false hope.

How professional seed recovery works

Seed recovery means working with the words you still have, so you'll share your partial phrase with us. Share it only with a recovery service you've verified, never with anyone who contacts you first. We're a registered New Hampshire company run by a public father-and-son team, and you can talk to our founders on Zoom before sending anything.

We run the search offline, check each valid candidate against the addresses you give us, and tell you as soon as we find your wallet. Once you're back in, move your funds to a new wallet with a new phrase.

Protect your phrase from here on

  • Write all 12 words in order, numbered, on paper or stamped in metal.
  • Keep two copies in separate safe places.
  • Never store the phrase as a photo, screenshot, note, or cloud file.
  • Never type it into a website or send it to anyone. Phantom support never asks for your phrase or private key, and nobody legitimate needs your PIN.
  • Ignore "seed phrase" lists and generators shared online. They're scams.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Phantom recovery phrase? Unlock Phantom, open your avatar, go to Settings, then Security & Privacy, then Show Recovery Phrase. If you signed up with Google or Apple, sign back in with the same provider first. If Phantom won't open because you've forgotten the password, a locked extension still holds an encrypted copy that may be recoverable.

Is the Phantom recovery phrase 12 or 24 words? Phantom creates 12-word phrases and can import 24-word phrases from other wallets. Phantom's Terminal trading account uses a separate 24-word phrase.

Do Google or Apple sign-in wallets have a recovery phrase? Yes. Even if you never saw it during setup, you can view and export it from Settings while you're signed in.

I signed up with Google or Apple and forgot my PIN. What now? Stop guessing. After seven wrong PINs, Phantom deletes the encrypted backup on that device, and Phantom can't reset a PIN. If Phantom is still open on another device, export your phrase there. If your wallet has already moved to Phantom's PIN-free sign-in, your Google or Apple account is all you need.

Why is my Phantom wallet empty after restoring? Usually because Phantom is showing a different account or address, the funds were in a separately imported key or Ledger account, or one word is slightly wrong but still passed the checksum. Compare the address with one you know held funds.

My phrase only has 11 words. Can it be fixed? Very likely. One missing word leaves about 2,048 possibilities, and the checksum cuts that to about 128 if you know where the gap is. Testing those against your address is fast.

Can Phantom support recover my phrase? No. Phantom never stores your phrase. Anyone claiming to be Phantom support who offers to recover it, or asks you for it, is a scammer.
