Short answer: yes, for everyday use. Keplr is one of the best-known wallets in the Cosmos ecosystem, it keeps your keys on your own device, and we found no documented breach of how it stores them. Its real risks are the usual self-custody ones: phishing, malicious signing requests, fake Keplr apps, and losing your own access. One honest gap: we couldn't find a public third-party audit of the current wallet.
We recover locked crypto wallets for a living, Keplr included, so this review also covers how people actually lose access.
What is Keplr?
Keplr Wallet is a non-custodial wallet created by Chainapsis, available as a browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and a mobile app (iOS, Android), plus a web dashboard. It started in the Cosmos ecosystem, where it's used for IBC transfers, staking, and governance, and now also supports EVM networks, Bitcoin, and Starknet.
How Keplr protects your crypto
Your keys stay on your device. On a standard account, Keplr encrypts your private key with your password and stores it locally. Keplr says it never keeps your keys or recovery phrase, and websites never receive your keys; every signature needs your approval in Keplr.
Auto-lock and transaction approvals. Keplr locks itself after a period you choose and asks you to approve each transaction or signature.
Hardware wallet support. You can connect a Ledger or Keystone, so your keys never leave the hardware device. Keplr Mobile works with Ledger over Bluetooth.
Several account types. Besides the standard 12- or 24-word recovery-phrase account, you can sign up with Google (which gives you a private key rather than a phrase) or connect a hardware wallet. Each one recovers differently, which matters if you ever get locked out.
What we couldn't confirm:
- Open-source status. Keplr's wallet code was historically published on GitHub. As of October 2026 that repository is no longer public. Keplr's Firefox listing still describes the extension as open source, but we couldn't confirm the current code is published.
- A public audit. We didn't find a named third-party security audit of the current wallet.
- Two-factor authentication. We found no Keplr-wide 2FA setting. As with most self-custody wallets, your password, device, and recovery phrase are the security.
Has Keplr ever been hacked?
We found no confirmed breach of Keplr's key generation or encryption, and no reported mass theft from Keplr itself. Two things are worth knowing:
- 2023: browser-extension research. A study presented at USENIX Security in August 2023 tested many wallet extensions, including an older Keplr version from 2022, and showed a conditional attack that depended on browser bugs. It was research, not a documented theft, and it predates current versions.
- 2025: fake Keplr add-ons. In July 2025, BleepingComputer reported dozens of malicious Firefox add-ons impersonating crypto wallets, including Keplr, built to steal recovery phrases. These were counterfeits, not Keplr's official extension.
Also worth separating: hacks of Cosmos chains, bridges, or apps you connect to through Keplr aren't Keplr breaches.
Your biggest risk is losing your own access
The most common way people lose crypto in Keplr isn't a hack. It's getting locked out:
- Forgot your password, but have your recovery phrase? Import the phrase and set a new password. Make sure the phrase is right before you remove the old install; our password guide shows how to check.
- Forgot your password and lost the phrase? Don't uninstall, reset, or clear Keplr on any device, and don't tap "Reset Keplr Mobile" on your phone. Keplr's official fix deletes the encrypted wallet, which is the one thing that can still be recovered. See our Keplr password recovery guide.
- Phrase missing a word, or imported to the wrong address? Usually fixable. See our Keplr recovery phrase guide.
This is the work we do. If your Keplr extension is still installed and you've forgotten the password, or your recovery phrase is incomplete, Crypto Asset Recovery may be able to get you back in. You only pay if we succeed.
Keplr scams to watch for
- Fake Keplr support. Keplr warns about fake "Keplr Support" accounts on X. Keplr says its team will never reach out asking you to verify your wallet or type in your recovery phrase or private key.
- Phishing sites and fake apps. Lookalike Keplr websites and counterfeit extensions ask you to "restore" or "verify" your wallet. Install Keplr only from keplr.app or the official browser and app stores.
- Airdrop and NFT phishing. Tokens or NFTs appear in your wallet with a link to "claim" something. The site asks you to sign a transaction that drains your account.
- Scam governance proposals. Fake proposals in Cosmos governance link to phishing sites. Don't follow links in proposals you didn't expect.
- Blind signing. Read what a transaction does before approving it, especially on sites you don't know.
If your funds were stolen, we don't recover stolen crypto, but we can refer you to a partner who investigates theft. Be wary of anyone promising to get stolen crypto back for an upfront fee.
Best practices to stay safe on Keplr
- Write your recovery phrase on paper or metal and keep it offline. Note any custom derivation path too.
- Use a strong, unique Keplr password and keep it in a password manager.
- Install Keplr only from keplr.app or the official stores.
- Use a Ledger for larger balances.
- Check every signing request, and ignore surprise airdrops and governance links.
- If you signed up with Google, export and safely store your private key while you can.
Verdict: Is Keplr safe?
Keplr is a mature, widely used wallet with no documented breach of its key storage. Its weak spots are transparency (no public audit we could find, and the source code is no longer fully public) and the phishing-heavy environment Cosmos users operate in. Keep your phrase offline, verify what you sign, and use a hardware wallet for larger amounts. Do that, and Keplr is a sound choice.

Can Keplr be hacked? We found no documented breach of how Keplr stores keys. Wallets get emptied through phishing sites, malicious signatures, fake Keplr add-ons, or malware on the user's device.
Is Keplr open source? It was, historically. Keplr's code was published on GitHub, but as of October 2026 that repository is no longer public, so we can't confirm the current version's code is published.
Is Keplr safe for large amounts? For larger balances, connect a Ledger so your keys stay on the hardware device. Keplr on its own is a hot wallet.
Does Keplr support Ledger? Yes. Keplr works with Ledger (including over Bluetooth on mobile) and Keystone hardware wallets.
What happens if I forget my Keplr password? If you have your recovery phrase, reinstall Keplr and import it. If you don't, don't uninstall or reset Keplr on any device: the encrypted wallet in your browser may still be recoverable. Our Keplr password guide explains how.
