Forgot your Keplr password? What Keplr's reinstall fix really deletes, what to try first, and how a still-installed Keplr extension can be recovered.

Forgot Your Keplr Wallet Password? How to Recover It (2026)

Keplr is asking for a password you can't remember, and Keplr can't help: it never stores your password, your private keys, or your recovery phrase. Its official fix is to uninstall the extension and import your wallet again from your recovery phrase. If you have the phrase, that works fine. If you don't, stop before you uninstall anything, because the encrypted wallet sitting in your browser may be your only way back.

This guide covers a forgotten password. If you've lost your recovery phrase, or it won't import, read our Keplr recovery phrase guide instead.

We recover crypto wallets for a living, so we'll tell you what's realistic.

First, which kind of Keplr account do you have?

Keplr supports a few account types, and each one comes back a different way:

  • A recovery-phrase account (12 or 24 words). This is the standard Keplr wallet, and the one this guide is mostly about.
  • A Google sign-in account. You get back in by signing in with the same Google account again. There's no recovery phrase for this type; Keplr gives you a private key instead.
  • A Ledger or Keystone account. The keys live on your hardware wallet. Reconnect the device; your Keplr password never protected those keys.

How Keplr stores your keys and password

Keplr is non-custodial. On a standard account, your keys are encrypted with your Keplr password and stored on your own device. On the browser extension, that encrypted wallet lives in your browser's extension data. Keplr's servers never see it, so Keplr support can't reset the password or look anything up.

That design is also what makes recovery possible. The encrypted wallet in your browser is locked by your password and nothing else, and a locked file can be worked on offline.

Have your recovery phrase? Reset in a few minutes

If you still have your 12- or 24-word recovery phrase, a forgotten password is easy to fix:

  1. Check the phrase first, without touching your current install. Import it into Keplr in a separate browser profile or on another device, and confirm it shows the address you know. A phrase with one wrong word can still import, into an empty wallet, and by then the old install may be gone.
  2. Browser extension: remove and reinstall Keplr, choose to import an existing wallet, enter your recovery phrase, and set a new password.
  3. Keplr Mobile: use Reset Keplr Mobile on the lock screen, then import your accounts again and set a new password.

Your funds come back because they live on the blockchain, not in the app. If an imported wallet looks empty, check that you chose the right phrase length (12 or 24) and the right derivation path; our recovery phrase guide walks through that.

No recovery phrase? Don't uninstall or reset

Keplr's own help center warns that reinstalling without your recovery phrase or login details can lose the account for good. If you don't have the phrase:

  • Don't uninstall or reinstall the Keplr extension. Removing it deletes the encrypted wallet from your browser.
  • Don't click any "forgot password", "reset", or "remove wallet" option inside Keplr. These clear the encrypted wallet the same way a reinstall does.
  • Don't clear your browser's data or reset that browser profile.
  • Don't use "Reset Keplr Mobile" on your phone until you're sure you have a way back in.
  • Don't wipe, sell, or trade in the computer or phone that has Keplr on it.

As long as the encrypted wallet is still there, there's something to recover from.

Before you start: what you need

  • The computer and browser profile where Keplr is still installed. That's where the encrypted wallet lives.
  • Your best password guesses: passwords you reuse, variations of them, and anything you noted when you set Keplr up.
  • Your password manager and browser autofill. Check them first.

You won't need your recovery phrase for any of this. Password recovery works on the encrypted wallet.

DIY recovery, step by step

1. Search your saved passwords

Look through your password manager, browser autofill, and notes for "Keplr," "Cosmos," or "wallet." Plenty of people find the password there.

2. Confirm the wallet is still there

If Keplr opens to a password prompt, the encrypted wallet is still in that browser. That's what recovery works from.

3. List your password building blocks

Write down the base words you reuse, the numbers and symbols you add, how you capitalize, and the passwords you were using when you installed Keplr. Note every variation you can think of.

4. Turn them into a testing plan

Combine those pieces in the patterns you actually use. Most forgotten passwords are a familiar pattern with one detail out of place, and a methodical list catches that far more often than random guessing.

When DIY isn't enough: professional recovery

If the Keplr extension is still installed and the password won't come back, this is the work we do. Crypto Asset Recovery uses secure, offline password cracking to recover access to encrypted Keplr extension wallets. You send us the encrypted wallet and your list of password candidates. We run the cracking on offline, air-gapped machines, so your keys are never exposed online.

You only pay if we succeed. Completely risk-free.

Start your recovery →

Tell us as much as you can about how you build passwords and when you set up Keplr. If you'd rather not share every password you use, give us close variants or only the ones you think are relevant. That lowers the odds somewhat, and it's your call.

If you only ever used Keplr on your phone, contact us anyway, but we can't promise anything there: pulling an encrypted wallet off a phone is a different problem from the extension, and we look at those case by case.

When recovery isn't possible

With no recovery phrase, no encrypted wallet (Keplr already removed or reset everywhere), no Google sign-in, and no hardware wallet, there's nothing left to recover from, and the funds are very likely gone. Self-custody has no master key.

Once you're back in, read our Keplr Wallet safety review for how to keep it that way.

Watch out for fake Keplr support

Keplr warns about fake "Keplr Support" accounts on X and fake websites asking for recovery phrases. Keplr says its team will never reach out asking you to verify your wallet or type in your phrase or private key. Anyone who messages you offering to unlock your wallet is a scammer.

Frequently asked questions

Can Keplr reset my password? No. Keplr never stores your password or keys, so it can't reset them. The only official fix is reinstalling and importing your wallet again from your recovery phrase, which deletes the old encrypted wallet.

What happens if I uninstall Keplr without my recovery phrase? The encrypted wallet in your browser is deleted, and without the phrase there's usually no way to get it back. If you've lost the phrase, leave Keplr installed and contact a recovery specialist first.

I signed up with Google. How do I get back into Keplr? Sign in again with the same Google account. Google sign-in accounts don't have a Keplr recovery phrase; they use a private key, which you can export while you're signed in.

Does my Keplr password protect my Ledger? No. A Ledger or Keystone account's keys stay on the hardware device. Reconnect the device to get back in; its own recovery phrase is your backup.

How long does recovery take? Anywhere from about 20 to 30 minutes to, in our longest case, over two years. Most of that time is passive. You send us your encrypted wallet and your best guesses, we run the recovery on our own machines, and we come back to you for fresh guesses each time we finish a batch.

Is it safe to send you my wallet file? Crypto Asset Recovery is a registered company in New Hampshire, run by a public father-and-son team, Chris and Charles, and you can talk to them on Zoom before sending anything. The encrypted file is useless without the password, and we work on it offline.
