Keplr Recovery Phrase: What to Do If It's Lost, Invalid, or Missing Words

Your Keplr recovery phrase is the master key to your wallet, across Cosmos, EVM, and every other chain Keplr supports. When it won't import, imports to the wrong address, or turns out to be missing a word, it feels like the end. Often it isn't. A phrase that Keplr rejects is usually one small mistake from working, and a phrase with a word or two missing can very often be rebuilt. This guide covers what we see most, plus the Keplr accounts that never had a phrase in the first place.

We recover crypto wallets for a living, seed-phrase cases included, so we'll tell you what's realistic.

What is a Keplr recovery phrase?

A Keplr recovery phrase is a list of 12 or 24 words that generates every private key and address in your wallet. Keplr lets you create or import either length. The words come from the standard 2,048-word BIP39 list, and the last word works partly as a checksum. Keplr is non-custodial: it never stores your phrase, and its support team says it can't help if the phrase is lost.

Word order, spelling, and the phrase length all have to be exact.

Lost the paper but can still open Keplr? Write the phrase down now. In the extension, click your profile icon in the upper right, then the three dots next to your account, then View Recovery Phrase, and enter your password. One exception: some Keplr accounts created in 2020 predate the "view recovery phrase" feature and can't display it.

Does your Keplr account even have a recovery phrase?

Not every Keplr account does:

  • Recovery-phrase accounts (12 or 24 words): this guide.
  • Google sign-in accounts have no recovery phrase. They use a private key, which you can export while you're signed in, and you get back in by signing in with the same Google account.
  • Ledger or Keystone accounts keep their keys on the hardware wallet. The device's own recovery phrase is your backup, not anything in Keplr.
  • Imported private keys aren't derived from any phrase, so they won't reappear when you import a phrase.

If you have the phrase but forgot your Keplr password, read our Keplr password recovery guide instead.

Scenario A: Keplr says your phrase is invalid

Keplr calls the recovery phrase a mnemonic, so the error you see may read "Invalid mnemonic" or "Too short mnemonic". The words are usually close, with one detail off:

  • A misspelled word. Each word must match the BIP39 list exactly. The first four letters of a word (or the whole word, if it's shorter) are enough to identify it, which helps with messy handwriting.
  • Words out of order, or two words swapped. This usually fails the checksum. Occasionally a swapped phrase still passes and opens an empty wallet (see Scenario B).
  • The wrong phrase length. Make sure you've chosen 12 or 24 words to match what you have. If you only have 11 or 23 words ("Too short mnemonic"), skip to Scenario C.
  • Extra spaces or capitals. Enter the words in lowercase, separated by single spaces.

If every word looks right and the phrase still won't validate, a word may be misread. That's a search problem, and it's often solvable.

Scenario B: The phrase imports, but the address or balance is wrong

This is common with Keplr, and usually nothing is lost:

  1. A different derivation path. Keplr builds addresses from a path like m/44'/118'/0'/0/0. Cosmos chains typically use coin type 118 and EVM chains 60, but some chains differ, and Keplr's import screen lets you set a custom path. If you set a different account or address index when you created the wallet, the same words lead to a different address. Compare the address Keplr shows against one you know held funds.
  2. The wrong chain or hidden tokens. Check that the chain is enabled and that the tokens aren't hidden.
  3. A slightly wrong phrase that still passed. The checksum catches most mistakes, but some wrong phrases still pass (about 1 in 16 for 12 words, 1 in 256 for 24) and open a valid, empty wallet. Check every word against your original.
  4. The funds were in a Google sign-in, Ledger, or imported-key account. See the list above: those never came from your phrase.

Scenario C: One or more words are missing

This is where the checksum helps you:

  • One missing word, and you know where it goes: 2,048 possibilities, cut by the checksum to about 128 for a 12-word phrase, or just 8 for a 24-word phrase. Checking those against your address takes minutes.
  • One missing word, position unknown: tens of thousands of candidates, of which a few hundred to a couple of thousand are valid. Still quick.
  • Two missing words, positions known: about 4.2 million possibilities. A real search, but a realistic one. If you don't know where the gaps are, it grows to hundreds of millions or more.
  • Three or more: billions of combinations. Harder, but sometimes possible, especially if you remember fragments.

What helps most: the words you have, in order; the phrase length; any letters you remember; and an address you know the wallet used, along with the chain and any custom derivation path.

If you're missing words, this is exactly what we do. Crypto Asset Recovery reconstructs incomplete and invalid recovery phrases offline, testing every valid combination against your wallet's addresses on air-gapped machines. You only pay if we succeed.

Scenario D: The phrase is gone entirely

Without any of the words, nobody can rebuild the phrase. But check these first:

  • Is Keplr still open on any device? View and write down the phrase there.
  • Is the Keplr extension still installed, but you forgot the password? The encrypted wallet in your browser holds your keys. With your password guesses, it's a candidate for password recovery. See our Keplr password recovery guide, and don't uninstall the extension in the meantime.
  • Only have Keplr on your phone, and it's locked? Don't tap "Reset Keplr Mobile", reinstall the app, or clear its data: each one deletes the wallet on the phone. Leave the phone as it is and talk to us first. Phone cases are harder, and we look at them case by case.
  • Did you sign up with Google, or use a Ledger? Those come back through your Google account or your hardware wallet.

If none of these apply, the wallet is very likely unrecoverable. We'd rather tell you that plainly than sell you false hope.

How professional seed recovery works

Seed recovery means working with the words you still have, so you'll share your partial phrase with us. Share it only with a recovery service you've verified, never with anyone who contacts you first. We're a registered New Hampshire company run by a public father-and-son team, and you can talk to our founders on Zoom before sending anything.

We run the search offline, check each valid candidate against the addresses you give us, and tell you as soon as we find your wallet. Once you're back in, move your funds to a new wallet with a new phrase.

Protect your phrase from here on

  • Write the words in order, numbered, on paper or stamped in metal.
  • Keep two copies in separate safe places.
  • Never store the phrase as a photo, screenshot, note, or cloud file.
  • If you use a custom derivation path, write that down too.
  • Never type your phrase into a website or give it to anyone who contacts you. Keplr never asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Keplr recovery phrase 12 or 24 words? Either. Keplr lets you create or import a 12- or 24-word phrase. Choose the matching length when you import.

Why does Keplr show a different address after I import my phrase? Usually because of the derivation path. Keplr derives addresses from a path that can include a custom account or address index, and the same words on a different path give a different address. Check the path and the chain before assuming the phrase is wrong.

I signed up with Google. Where is my recovery phrase? Google sign-in accounts don't have one. They use a private key, which you can export while signed in, and you recover the account by signing in with the same Google account.

My phrase only has 11 words. Can it be fixed? Very likely. One missing word leaves about 2,048 possibilities, and the checksum cuts that to about 128 if you know where the gap is. Testing those against your address is fast.

Can Keplr support recover my phrase? No. Keplr never stores your phrase. Anyone claiming to be Keplr support who offers to recover it, or asks you for it, is a scammer.

Can I change my Keplr recovery phrase? Not on the same wallet. To get a new phrase, create a new wallet and move your funds to it.
